In October 2015, Invenergy proposed building a gas/oil power plant in an environmentally sensitive area without an adequate local water supply. The proposal has been opposed by many Rhode Island municipalities and groups, especially the Town of Burrillville and the Conservation Law Foundation. In January 2018, RI Attorney General Kilmartin publicly opposed the proposal in January 2018, but other than some legislators (of Burrillville and a few others), no government officials have expressed disapproval.
The governor has supported the power plant. Also, some business and construction groups have been supporting the plan, in particular The Energy Council of RI. Rhode Islanders for Affordable Energy also support Invenergy, but note their website is paid for by Clear River Energy Center 0n 1/25/18.
