RI Adult Ed Program Providers

Most of the information on adult education in ProvGardener was compiled around 2015 when the state's adult education resources were a chaos. This will be reworked eventually. - ed.

This table can be sorted by Town/City or by Program Name. Click on column head.

To find current classes by type, time, and place, use the RI Resource Hub. You can enter skill level, etc., in the main page. To find specific current classes, use the advanced search and enter the name of an organization, NEDP, GED, ESL, etc.

Note: RI Resource Hub only lists classes funded by RIDE provided by about 34 organizations. There may also be other classes offered in Rhode Island.

Adult Education: GED, ABE, Diploma Plus (a program for people who have completed 12 of the 24 credits needed for a high school diploma), Transition to College, ESL, EL Civics. Some Computer instruction may be scheduled in April 2015, Various apprentice and certificate programs.

Volunteers are referred to Literacy Volunteers of the East Bay.

Central Falls Central Falls High School Adult Education

Adult Education: Project RIRAL offers ESL, ABE, ASE, GED, and NEDP evening classes at Central Falls High School; [also note: Project LEARN offers FREE Adult ESL classes (for parents of students in Central Falls schools).]
Providence Community Action Partnership of Providence (CAPP)

Adult Education: ABE, advanced ESOL, pre-GED classes. Improve reading, writing, math, computer skills were offered in 2015, but do not appear on the website in November 2016. There is only a bookkeeping certificate program.

Providence Crossroads Rhode Island

Adult Education: ABE, rarely GED, Adult literacy, Math instruction, Computer Classes. Remedial help for students in other training programs. Small groups, one-on-one tutoring. Partners with Amos House to offer the NEDP program and currently (March 2015) have 2 students dually enrolled in both of our programs.

Warren Literacy Volunteers of East Bay (LVEB)

Adult Education: ABE, ASE, GED, NED (=NEDP), ESL (ELL = English language learner). Students meet with tutors in public places, such as East Providence Public Library, Barrington Public Library, and in fall 2015, Pawtucket Public Library, as well as at the office in Warren and another location in Newport.

Coventry Literacy Volunteers of Kent County

Adult Education: ESL and ABE.

Our 18-hour tutor training workshop teaches the skills needed to effectively work one-to-one with an adult student. Once the workshop is underway, volunteers are matched with a student and they meet in a public location on their own schedule for 2 hours a week. Prospective tutors must be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. Lessons are typically conducted in libraries, churches, or community centers.
Westerly Literacy Volunteers of Washington County - Westerly

Adult Education: Small literacy groups (ABE, ESL), Citizenship Group, Staffed computer lab, GED or External Diploma (NEDP) prep, financial literacy, workforce literacy

Charlestown Narragansett Indian Tribe

Adult Education: High school completion, learning skills instruction and cultural education awareness.
Central Falls Progreso Latino

Adult Education: ESL, ABE, ASE, GED, Citizenship, Job training. On the Central Falls School Department website: Progreso Latino offers GED, ESL, and literacy classes. Parents must register at Progreso Latino, 626 Broad Street. These classes are offered at Progreso Latino in the morning and in the evening at Calcutt Middle School, 112 Washington Street from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Parents that have children who attend Calcutt/Calcutt Too do not have to pay for the classes, but they need to prove they have a child enrolled at the school. Woonsocket Project Learn

Adult Education: ABE (6th-8th grade reading level), Computer Instruction, ESL, Family literacy, individual tutoring, Distance Learning. The GED subjects taught are Mathematics, Writing and reading for Social Studies, Science and Literature. In addition, original text or categories of interest to the class.  Students have access to the internet and researched based software.

Adult Education: Resident adults are offered opportunities for lifelong learning and the acquisition of skills necessary to improve income and attain self sufficiency. Programs include a Family Self Sufficiency Program (FSS), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, Basic Computer instruction, Life Skills Training, Financial Literacy, and Homeownership services.

Westbay Literacy/GED
Under the guidance of the GED instructors, volunteers will work with adult students one-on-one in a classroom setting at the Buttonwoods Community Center. Volunteers work with the students on building skills in math, writing and reading in order to work towards passing the GED tests.
