About Adult Education Providers

Lists of Adult Education Providers

One facet of the adult education maze in Rhode Island is the type of organization providing services.

COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAMS (CAP)

One type is the CAP - Community Action Programs or agencies. Rhode Island has 8 or 9 depending on whether you count East Bay Community Action Lower and Upper Bay Regions as separate organizations. The RI Community Action Association has centralized information about all the programs on their website. Note that the agencies are not named consistently, which is confusing to the public (or at least it confuses me a bit). All of the services offered, including education, by the CAPs are listed here. The person responsible for overseeing the community service block grants, which provide the basic funding for CAPs in Rhode Island, is in the Department of Human Services - listed on this page. [Need to check this with DHS.]

Not only is there the RI Community Action Association, but there is a New England Community Action Partnership  and a Community Action Partnership National Associatlon. The regional and national associations have a different name for the Woonsocket CAP and/or leave off a CAP. [Librarians like to have consistency so this is bothersome to me! But this is a frequent issue because most groups don't have the resources to keep their websites up to date.]

For background on the CAP, which dates to the 1964 Economic Opportunity Act and the War on Poverty, see Oregon's description.

OTHER TYPES

As I sort through the adult education providers and identify other relevant type of providers I will add them to this page.
